Norwalk, CT – The Maritime Aquarium is pleased to announce the arrival of two new residents – fennec foxes Trooper and Hokees. Trooper, a 10-year-old male, and Hokees, a 7-year-old female, are the first fennec foxes to call the Aquarium home.

“The most unique feature of the fennec fox is its large ears,” said Associate Director of Animal Husbandry Rachel Stein. “Many people already know that their ears are to help them hear, but they don’t know that they also help them cool off in the hot desert as well.”

Fennec foxes are nocturnal animals native to the Sahara Desert, a sandy environment with minimal grass and shrub vegetation. They live in family structures of up to 10 individuals and communicate with each other through whimpers, barks, cries, and growls.

The pair came to the Aquarium from the Cincinnati Zoo. They can be found on the second floor of the Aquarium next to the meerkats. As they adjust to their new home, Trooper and Hokees may not be visible at all times.
