ENFIELD, CT – The Salvation Army is holding a food distribution of fresh produce, meat, cheese, and milk on October 23rd from 9:00am to 1:00pm at Enfield Square. This distribution is part of the State of Connecticut’s new initiative, Farmers-to-Families, to provide emergency food resources to Connecticut’s food pantries as the state continues to respond to the ongoing impact of the global COVID-19 pandemic. The Connecticut Department of Agriculture is utilizing the website CTPantryResources.com to facilitate statewide distribution of U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Farmers-to-Families Food Boxes.
Food distributed will help support families in need as part of The Salvation Army’s ongoing COVID-19 crisis response effort. “We are grateful for the state of CT and US Dept. of Agriculture for presenting this opportunity for The Salvation Army to make these fresh harvest, meat and dairy goods available to CT families in need,” said Major Gregory Hartshorn, Divisional Commander of The Salvation Army’s Southern New England Division. “Our Officer staff and volunteers will be present to happily serve the families upon their arrival.”
The Salvation Army’s Emergency Disaster Services department is coordinating with state and local leads to determine gap feeding needs for vulnerable populations across the state. With the increased need and scarce food resources, The Salvation Army is continually working to secure food products from multiple sources and assemble and then distribute hundreds of food boxes to hard hit areas each week.
The Salvation Army has provided over 1.7 million meals to Connecticut residents during the Coronavirus pandemic. Since mid-March, 1,795,345 meals were provided, and 132,523 individuals have been served. Emotional and spiritual care was provided 6,966 times and 1,491 volunteers have provided important logistical support throughout the state.
