HARTFORD, CT – The Salvation Army will deliver 700 meals to seniors in need in Hartford, East Hartford, West Hartford, Bloomfield, Newington, Windsor and Wethersfield on Thanksgiving Day. Volunteers will arrive starting at 9:00 am at The Salvation Army located at 217-225 Washington Street in Hartford. Meal deliveries will begin at 10:00 am.

“We recognize that this has been extremely difficult and challenging year for our friends throughout the Greater Hartford Area as well as our country and we want to do our part to ensure that we are helping to feed a vulnerable population,” said Major Migdalia Lavenbein, Greater Hartford Area Services Coordinator of The Salvation Army. This program has been made possible by Sorenson-Pearson Family Foundation, Table Talk Pies, Farm House Catering, and many dedicated volunteers.

Within the Greater Hartford area, The Salvation Army operates a variety of programs that seek to serve neighbors in need of all ages, including: Marshall House’s Homeless Prevention and Shelter Diversion program, Family Shelter, Shelter and Navigation services for Youth; Winter Overflow Shelter, and Winter Warming Center; The Right Place early learning programs; Anti-Human Trafficking Bloom Initiative; Parents Second Time Around for grandparent caregivers; Emergency Material Assistance; Holiday Meals for homebound seniors; Toy Distribution; Camp CONNRI; and more.

The Salvation Army’s Holiday Meals program has been providing nutritious meals to homebound seniors on Thanksgiving and Christmas for well over 30 years. Last Year, 2019, we were privileged to serve 732 Christmas meals and 709 Thanksgiving meals! As one senior said, “I am so grateful for this program. Without it, I am not sure that I or other seniors like me would be able to afford a nice meal.”

The mission of The Salvation Army’s Holiday Meals program is to ensure that seniors, who are
homebound, isolated or disabled, receive a nutritious meal on Thanksgiving and Christmas. It is important, especially during the holidays, that people who are often isolated from family know that they are remembered and valued.

This gift goes beyond those receiving the meals. It also brings joy to those delivering the meals. “Volunteers have the opportunity, through kindness, to touch another soul,” said Major Tim Lavenbein, Greater Hartford Area Services Coordinator of The Salvation Army. “This will let them know they are seen and appreciated. Holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas should bring joy to all.”

The Salvation Army has received hundreds of requests from seniors for this year’s Holiday Meals program and plans on serving all they can. The Salvation Army is the only agency in the Greater Hartford Area that delivers a holiday meal to seniors on these holidays every year and support from its donors helps to continue supporting those most in need in the Greater Hartford community!

On Christmas day, another 700 meals will be delivered to seniors.
