HARTFORD, CT – Today, state Senator Carlo Leone (D-Stamford) released the following statement regarding news of the first confirmed case of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) in Stamford.
“The first case has been reported in the city of Stamford and officials are working diligently and taking proactive steps to follow the proper protocols regarding this situation at this time,” said Sen. Leone. “We will share information with the public when appropriate. I cannot stress enough the importance of preparedness over panic as we all work to curtail the spread of this virus.”
The confirmed case in Stamford becomes the fourth reported confirmed case in Connecticut. According to city officials, on March 10, the resident ” returned from international travel was preemptively quarantined at Stamford Health.” The next day the individual tested positive for COVID-19. City officials report the virus was not contracted in the United States or in Stamford. The release from the city is attached.
This news comes less than a day after the World Health Organization on Wednesday declared COVID-19 a global pandemic. On Thursday, Stamford schools announced they will close for at least two weeks and Governor Ned Lamont and state legislators encouraged employees who can work from their homes to do so.
